4th of July Thoughts

4th of July Thoughts

Off the top of my head...

Like probably a lot of you, in recent years I find it hard to celebrate the 4th of July. America is far from a perfect union and we have a lot of work to do to make it truly free and equal for everyone. U2's Bono says "I love America. But it's not America yet. It's still the idea." I agree with that. We do have a lot of work ahead of us.

I think that's why I like superheroes so much. They set an example of what we could be if we put aside our selfishness and acted for the greater good. When a character puts on the costume and decides to become a hero (their apotheosis...ahem.) they do that because they recognize the power they hold can be shared and be used for the greater good. They believe that if they act selfishlessly, others will follow their lead. And, if enough people do a little it will lead to a lot and that little bit can change the world.

It's a good idea. Hard to put into practice in the real world, but it's worth a shot.

It's why Superman and Captain America are my two favorite characters. Yea, I know they are "lame" by modern standards, but I've been reading their comics for over 25 years, every month. Without fail. When I decided to get into political work and public policy - they were my guideposts. In fact, when I ran for office my campaign logo was based on Captain America's shield. But more than just a slick design Captain America was the symbol of what I thought public policy should be - a reflection of what America could be. Superman, who represented absolute power for each era (I can go on for hours about Superman), but his greatest power wasn't his strength it was his character. It is the belief that absolute power doesn't have too corrupt absolutely. A good person can be powerful and fair, and they can set an example. These are the types of leaders we need.

Every 4th of July I think about how far we have to go, how much work we need to do. We need more heroes. And maybe we need a few of them to wear bright colors so we know who they are.

Have a safe 4th of July and I hope to see you soon.

Martin
