The first issue of TMNT #1, launched at a comic show in Portsmouth, New Hampshire by creators Laird and Eastman, is a collector's gem. This oversized black and white issue, which spoofs several well-known comics of its era, notably mirrors Daredevil with elements like its Ninjitsu mentor Splinter, akin to Daredevil's Stick, and the antagonistic Foot clan, a nod to Daredevil's Hand. The issue was reprinted multiple times, with the first three editions maintaining the same oversized format and cover design.
The third print, which is this copy here, can be identified by the increased depiction of blood in the 'T' of 'Turtles' with about 35,000 copies printed. Collectors should be cautious as complete forgeries exist, typically recognizable by their white paper, unlike the original's cheaper newsprint.
