MONDAY AUGUST 28TH IS READ COMICS IN PUBLIC DAY!

Local Area Comic Shops Unite for Read Comics In Public Day, an annual event created by The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund

Attention all comic book enthusiasts! We are excited to announce that the local area comic shops in St. Louis have joined forces to celebrate Read Comics In Public Day on Monday, August 28th. This event, organized by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), encourages everyone to embrace their love for graphic literature by stepping out into public spaces and reading their comics. August 28th is also the birthday of comic book legend Jack Kirby.

Read Comics In Public Day aims to promote the joy and accessibility of comic books and graphic novels. Over the past decade graphic novels have become a widely accepted method of educators to teach reading comprehension. From improving critical thinking and inference skills and increasing vocabulary and language development - the combination of engaging visuals and concise text can make reading more accessible and appealing for reluctant readers.

“The benefits of reading comics can’t be disputed;” says Apotheosis Comics owner Martin Casas, “unfortunately there is still a stigma around reading comics and graphic novels. People believe it’s medium for kids and “nerds” - but I’ve got news for you - nerds rule the world. And they read comics.”

HOW TO PARTICIPATE: To participate in this celebration of comics, all you need to do is find a local coffee shop, park, restaurant, or any other public location that appeals to you, then dive into your favorite comic and post a photo on social media. Use the hashtag #ReadComicsInPublicDay and tag your LCS (Local Comic Shop) so others can participate.

The collaboration between local comic shops and the CBLDF for this event represents a significant milestone for the community. By working together, they hope to foster a stronger sense of support, camaraderie, and appreciation for comic books and the artistic talents behind them. Additionally, by partnering with the CBLDF - a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the freedom to read, create, and distribute comics - this event also raises awareness about the legal issues faced by the industry.

Join us on Monday, August 28th, as we transform public spaces in the St. Louis region into vibrant hubs of comic book enthusiasm. Whether you are a lifelong fan or new to the world of comics, this is a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, discover new titles, and celebrate the power of storytelling through this unique medium.
