In a world without Frank Castle, a new vigilante has arisen to take his place and inflict justice on the criminals of the world - retired S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent Joe Garrison.

What leads Garrison to take up the Punisher mantle? How will he survive his mission for vengeance? You know what you have to do to find out...

If you are a fan of John Wick, James Bond, or The Fugitive, you're going to love this book.

Joe Garrison, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. black-ops agent is continuing the legacy of the Punisher. Readers will be introduced to him in November's edition of Punisher #1, written by David Pepose and featuring artwork by Dave Wachter. Pepose talked to CBR about the new Punisher, highlighting the similarities and differences between him and Castle, the people he is targeting and those in pursuit of him. You can check out a couple images Marvel released as a special preview of Dave Wachter's pencils and inks for Punisher #1 below.

Pepose made it clear that he was not the one who initially thought of Joe Garrison taking up the Punisher mantle, but it was Tom Brevoort, Marvel editor, who came up with the idea. He went on to explain that in Joe's story, he discovers his own identity, and how the Punisher mantle is not something that is chosen, but something that happens to him. He put it this way: "While this character has a very particular set of skills, the throughline of our story is about Joe coming to terms with the Punisher mantle — it’s not always a legacy that you adopt. Sometimes it’s a legacy that finds you."

Speaking to CBR on the character he said "Creating a legacy character to fill the Punisher mantle was a really daunting challenge, but one I'd thought a lot about already, thanks to working with Punisher 2099 over in Savage Avengers. Your question is really kind of a two-parter, so I'll break it down one piece at a time -- just like the journey I had when my editor Tom Brevoort first approached me about introducing Joe Garrison to the Marvel Universe as our all-new Punisher, I think there's a degree of finding one's identity in Joe's overarching story. While this character has a very particular set of skills, the throughline of our story is about Joe coming to terms with the Punisher mantle -- it's not always a legacy that you adopt. Sometimes it's a legacy that finds you."
