Dovetailing with the nationwide celebration of Black History Month, AfterShock Comics is honored to reteam with writer Peter Calloway (THE LAST SPACE RACE, Gotham City Sirens) to tell the story of SHADOW DOCTOR, one of the most profoundly fascinating and important stories we’ve ever published.
Years in the making, this is the true story of Peter’s grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930s. Making his way to Prohibition-era Chicago, he was turned away from every hospital in Chicago and unable to start a practice of his own. Eventually, he secured employment with the one outfit that valued the quality of his skills over the color of his skin: Al Capone’s Mafia.
As Peter himself has said, “On the one hand, his story represents the promise of America. On the other hand, it shows the worst of it.”
Debuting tomorrow, February 17, at comic shops everywhere, SHADOW DOCTOR features the art of Eisner Award-winner Georges Jeanty (The American Way, X-Tremists) plus covers illustrated by the inimitable Mark Chiarello (oh, yass!)
